How to Become Who You Want to Be? (Part 2)

In Part 1, we shared 4 points which will help you become who you want to be. They are: 1) Be humble; 2) Be open minded; 3) Watch less TV; 4) Watch more useful videos.

Which of these points have you been practicing? Comment below.

Now, let’s dive into Part 2!

#1 Plan

If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. This was what Benjamin Franklin said. Benjamin Franklin was one of the Founding Fathers of the modern USA.

Planning is so crucial in achieving what you need to become who you want to be.

If you aim to be a manager in 2 years’ time, what skills do you need to learn? It is time to start thinking and planning on how you can learn the skills required. Keep in mind that learning any new skill takes time and lots of effort!

Some major skills that a manager needs include:

  1. Computer skills
    1. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    2. Email
  2. Communication
    1. English (written and spoken)
  3. Management
    1. Motivation
    2. Leadership
    3. Problem solving (read Point 2 of this article)
    4. Integrity

Once you have listed out the skills you need to learn, find out where and how you can learn them. Give yourself a deadline. Nothing is achieved without planning and execution.

#2 Focus

Lots of things can be done when you are focused. It is easier to know what to focus on when you have a plan.

To be a manager, you need to communicate better especially in English. That’s your focus and priority. Did you know that you can become a star at your workplace simply by remaining focused and prioritizing well (refer to Point 2 of this article)?

It is important to remember your plan and stay focused as there are many distractions in life. Distractions can come in the form of other good and interesting things. Your friend invites you to a free Japanese class. Is learning Japanese important and urgent? Should you go?

Here are ways to improve your focus:

  • Take a shower
  • Turn on the fan or air conditioner
  • Turn off non-essential or helpful notifications
  • Write down your goals and tasks

For an elaboration of each point, refer to How Can I Accomplish More This Year? (Part 3).

#3 Improve

In the past, you could stick to what you know and live comfortably. Sadly, that’s era is gone. The world is changing faster than before. You will be left behind in society if you choose not to learn new things and improve yourself.

Improving yourself is the only way you can help your family. This is also the only way your country can grow and prosper.

#4 Seize opportunities

You want to improve yourself. You want to become a manager in 2 years. You have a plan. You are determined to remain focus. You need to start grabbing hold of opportunities.

The Internet and WiFi have brought lots of opportunities. There was no instant messaging and email back then. Sending a message took days and even months. Your message would have to be hand delivered by a postman or pigeon.

Before, you had to visit shops to view and make purchases. You can view products and shop online now.

Learning has never been easier than before. The need to travel from place to place just to learn is diminishing thanks to the Internet and WiFi. You can learn from videos and articles. You can also book events online rather than having to be personally invited.

Watch useful videos and think of opportunities.

When presented with an opportunity to learn and grow, seize it like those who attended our talk on Saturday.
